How do I measure Internal Doors?

Measure the dimensions of your door opening, not the existing door – you will need a tape measure, pen and piece of paper.

It is essential to have a clear picture of what internal door style and size you are looking for. It needs to match your interior as well as be the correct size and colour. A frequently asked question is, ‘how do I measure up for new internal doors?’. This may seem straightforward, but it is very important to get it right. When it comes to installing a door, you need to be sure that the measurements are bang on beforehand.

A guide to measuring internal doors 1

Step 1: To find out the width of your door, measure across the top, the middle and the bottom, and take the largest measurement.

Step 2: Measure the height within the frame – on the left, centre and right – to determine your door height.

When you’re choosing a new carpet, remember that a thicker one will make closing a door more difficult.

Step 3: Measure the depth of the frame, where the door will fit when it’s closed. There are three standard thicknesses for internal doors in the UK – 35mm, 40mm and 44mm (fire door).

Once you have all your measurements, you are ready to compare them with the standard door sizes on our website. Many doors can be trimmed down if you find your measurements are slightly bigger.

If you don’t have a door in place, it’s a good idea to shop for one that can fit standard door frames. This way, the install process will be a little easier.

Step 4: If you need to adjust the width or height, you can trim it by a few millimetres. Every door has specific specs. Get in touch with our team to discuss how much can be trimmed off our range of internal doors.

FAQs

Are there any sizing standards for doors?

Doors come in a bunch of different sizing standards. When you shop for doors, make sure you double check the sizes upfront, but also measure your current door or frame. There are also custom doors that require bespoke manufacturing.

Why do you have to measure a door in more places?

When measuring the width or the length of your current door, you should do it in three places. Do it on each side, as well as the middle. This is because old doors could lose their shape and integrity overtime, not to mention warping, which may affect the sizing.

What should I use to measure a door?

A tape measure will get the job done. It is suitable for the length, width, and thickness of your door. Apart from measuring the actual thickness, you should also double check the rebate in the frame. This is the part where the door sits when perfectly shut.
